The perfect bar stool for your kitchen island

A kitchen island or bar is not only practical but also a real atmosphere setter. Whether you grab a quick morning coffee or enjoy long dinners with friends, good bar stools make all the difference. But how do you choose the right ones? In this blog we guide you step by step, from seat height to style.

The ideal seat height for your bar stool: how to choose it

The right height is essential for comfort. At Sav & Økse you’ll find bar stools in two standard heights:

  • Counter height (65 cm): suitable for a countertop or kitchen island of about 90–95 cm.
  • Bar height (80 cm): ideal for higher bars or counters from 105 cm.

A simple rule: leave around 30 cm of space between the seat and the underside of the countertop for enough legroom. Always measure your surface height and choose your stool accordingly.

Tip: the Sinni, Silja, Fjerre, and Olger bar stools are available in both heights.

How many people fit at your kitchen island?

This depends on the width of the stools and the size of your island. As a guideline:

  • 60 cm per person for compact stools without a backrest
  • 80 cm per person for wider models with a backrest

For a bar that is 150 cm wide, two bar stools usually fit comfortably.

Comfort: upholstered or sleek?

If you use your bar stools for longer sitting, such as breakfast or drinks, extra comfort is a good idea.

  • Choose a backrest or even armrests, like on our Edske bar chairs.
  • Prefer softer seating? Go for an upholstered seat. Many models can be personalized in fabric and color.

The look: mix wood tones and upholstery

A bar stool is not only functional. It also sets the mood in your kitchen. The wood color plays a big role in this.

Oak creates a light, natural look that fits perfectly in a Scandinavian interior.

Walnut adds warmth and depth, ideal for a classic or retro look.

Black lacquered wood creates a sleek and modern contrast.

Many models are also available with an upholstered seat in the fabric and color you prefer. This adds comfort and lets you match the stool subtly with the rest of your interior. Think soft gray tones for a calm base or a warm accent color. It’s an easy way to blend comfort and style.

Models like the Silja, Edske or Sinni come in different wood types and with or without upholstery, making them easy to mix and match with the style of your kitchen.
